Flame retardant exposure: polybrominated diphenyl ethers in
Riskvärdering av persistenta klorerade och bromerade
Prenatal exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been reported to impair executive function in children, but little is known whether childhood PBDE exposures play a role. EPA is concerned that certain PBDE congeners are persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic to both humans and the environment. The critical endpoint of concern for human health is neurobehavioral effects. Various PBDEs have also been studied for ecotoxicity in mammals, birds, fish, and invertebrates. These findings suggest that maternal PBDE exposure, particularly BDEs 28 and 47, are associated with maternal concentrations of T4and T3during pregnancy. pentaBDE and octaBDE prohibition and other PBDE reduction efforts.
Inadvertent dust ingestion may be a particularly important source of PBDE exposure among toddlers, who spend a lot of time on the ground and are far more likely to put their hands in their mouths than older children and adults. Human exposure to PBDEs is thought to result from dietary sources, including fish, fatty foods, and mother’s milk. However, oral ingestion from dust and leachates may be a larger source (Sjodin et al., 2008 a), particularly for children (Jones-Otazo et al., 2005; Stapleton et al., 2005). Once absorbed, PBDEs distribute into body fat. Prenatal exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been reported to impair executive function in children, but little is known whether childhood PBDE exposures play a role.

Epidemiological data regarding PBDE exposure and child health are limited. Preliminary and relatively small human studies of PBDE exposure in early life (assessed as breastmilk or cord blood concentrations) observe associations with: Decreased birth weight and length, chest circumference and BMI in a study of 20 Taiwanese infants. In future analyses, we will examine predictors of PBDE exposure such as diet, breastfeeding history, consumer electronics use, BMI, time outside the United States, and housing quality. Conclusion: Findings suggest that Mexican-American children living in California are experiencing higher PBDE exposure from their environment compared to children sampled from the general US population and Mexico. Exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) during fetal development may be associated with deficits in attention and impulse control.
